Oppose Massive Taxes and Fees on the Oil and Natural Gas Industry

It is critical that Members of Congress hear from members of the Partnership for America’s Energy Security in support of a comprehensive, balanced, long-term energy strategy for this country. This starts with support for an energy strategy that encourages the production of all forms of energy, especially oil and natural gas. Additionally, it calls for decision makers to recognize that massive increases to the costs of producing and consuming products made from oil and natural gas are actually designed to reduce production and supplies, reduce employment, increase imports, increase consumer costs and threaten government revenue.

Please tell the Members of Congress that they should encourage oil and natural gas exploration and that plans to impose massive taxes and fees on the oil and natural gas industry are simply counterproductive.

I am writing to strongly encourage you to support a comprehensive national energy strategy that promotes the development of all forms of energy but which recognizes that oil and natural gas will continue to play an important role in this nation’s energy future.

I want to stress that I firmly believe that recent proposals to impose taxes and fees on American oil and natural gas production and use further threaten this nation’s economic stability.  By discouraging the production of oil and natural gas in the United States, such taxes would threaten existing and new jobs in the industry and surrounding communities, and contribute to the skyrocketing unemployment already harming millions of American families.  Additionally, these new taxes would increase our reliance on imported oil, threaten government revenue streams, harm energy consumers, and hamstring efforts to address climate change by discouraging the use of clean-burning natural gas.

I strongly encourage you, as my elected representative in Washington, to support all legislative efforts to increase domestic oil and natural gas production and oppose any efforts to impede domestic production in the form of access restrictions or increased taxes and fees on the oil and natural gas industry.  Increased taxes and fees on the industry only reduce the working capital needed to expand production, create jobs and limit supplies. Such policies are designed to push up consumer prices for gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil as well as for the natural gas used to heat our homes and cook our meals. Limiting supplies of oil and natural gas, sending American jobs overseas and increasing consumer prices are not the tools to achieve economic recovery or energy security. Again, I ask you to oppose such ill-conceived strategies.

I appreciate your consideration of my request and hope that you will add your voice in support of expanded domestic production and a strong oil and natural gas industry.  Finally, please advise me of your position on this request.
